For a long time, for social media purposes I labeled myself as a “Tech agnostic CPA constantly seeking awesome cloud accounting solutions to help my customers revel in their passions and stop worrying about their back office.” It was pretty accurate.
Like most US accountants, my experience was heavily entrenched in QuickBooks. I was an Advanced Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor and was able to figure out the basics of QuickBooks Online in about ten minutes. I can pick up pretty much any accounting software with no trouble at all and was familiar with each one’s strengths and weaknesses. I can tell you which software is missing a balance sheet (and why), which one has strong integrations with other software, and which ones have you pay them so they can market you their other products.
In short, I’m an accountant who knows what she’s doing and is good with tech stuff. I am able to use any piece of software with relative ease and wanted people to know that I could help them navigate the cloud accounting waters. But a few months ago, I changed my label from “tech agnostic” to “Xero-biased”. Why?
Duh… because Xero kicks butt.
I understand that there are nay-sayers out there who will tell you about the limitations with payroll, inventory, and reporting. And they’re not wrong. There are still some limitations. I will happily concede that the software isn’t perfect. But that’s not the point. None of those things bother me, and I’ll tell you why.
Xero is constantly improving.
The reason I don’t pay much attention to people who complain about the features that Xero doesn’t have is because I know that Xero is working their butts off to make them a reality.
Xero has a decent update about every three to six weeks. You can see them actively improving the product as weeks and months go by, and I’m not talking about changing the color or size of a button. I’m talking about adding a filing system or the ability to run payroll. I mean c’mon. That’s pretty awesome.
Xero’s software is a reflection of its company’s culture.
One of the best things about the software is its open ecosystem. They have an open API that allows other companies to improve the functionality of Xero’s product by partnering with them (i.e., Bill.com, TaxJar).
This open environment is reflective of their company’s culture as they actively seek feedback and suggestions for improving their product. (This is not to say that the general populace gets to dictate the design of their product. They are very clear that they only will make changes that they believe will make their product better and more useful as a whole.) But everyone in the company is completely down-to-earth and accessible, and that totally resonates with us.
So yes – I am officially Xero-biased, and I’m proud our company is a Xero Partner. I’m anxious to see what they have in store for us over the next few years.
