Introducing our new Useful Tools Series!  I was going to say that I’ve been wanting to do this for months, but it’s probably more accurate to say I’ve been wanting to do it for years.

Catching Clouds has literally touched hundreds of different cloud tools over the past several years, and we are fully aware of how frustrating and overwhelming it can be to navigate all the accounting tools created to help make your life “easy.”

I think this picture from Accountex pretty much sums it up.

I mean, seriously… ugh.

Because of this, we wanted to be able to share a little bit of our insight on the tools we use, why we use them, some of our favorite tips or tricks, potential pitfalls to avoid, and what we’re hoping will improve in the coming weeks, months, or years.

I know many of you who have landed on this page are looking for the silver bullet that will solve all of your problems.  Spoiler alert… such an app does not exist.  Even our very, very favorite tools still have missing features that we want and need.  But this is a young industry, and our partners are working hard to make their products the best they can, and the best cloud companies listen to feedback and make changes quickly.  So even if they aren’t perfect now, they may solve 80% of your problems now, will solve another 5% next month, and may be close enough to perfect in the near future.

There are tools we found unusable (or non-existent) several years ago that we now find indispensible.  And vice versa.  So hang in there.

This series is primarily targeted at the end users… the DIY (do-it-yourself) ecommerce business owners and/or the people who help support their bookkeeping.  As such, our goal is to provide honest feedback which will help you navigate the waters.  Although we may get slight discounts on some products we already use, we never do paid-for reviews.  That’s lame.

If you want a crash course in accounting tools (particularly add-on tools), come to the Accountex conference next week and spend time talking to all the exhibitors there.  Scott and I will both be there and would be happy to spend a few minutes talking about our favorite tools… keep an eye out for us.  Scott will also be presenting two sessions on Ecommerce Accounting, and I’ll be moderating a round-table on Managing Client Expectations.  I highly recommend you attend if you’re interested in these topics.
